HAND-COLORED COPPER ENGRAVING
This 285 year old hand-colored copper engraving is from Fransois Pomey's (translated by Andrew Tooke) "THE PANTHEON, REPRESENTING THE FABULOUS HISTORIES OF THE HEATHEN GODS AND MOST ILLUSTRIOUS HEROES" published by Walthoe & Bettesworth & in 1726.
Andrew Tooke (1673–1732) was an English scholar, known best as the translator of Tooke's Pantheon, a standard textbook for a century on Greek mythology.
He received his education in the Charterhouse school. He was admitted a scholar of Clare Hall, Cambridge, in 1690, took the degree of B.A. in 1693, and commenced M.A. in 1697. In 1704 he was chosen a fellow of the Royal Society.
The engraving is in good condition, with usual age toning. The image is about 5 1/2 " x 3 1/4 " on a page that is about 6 1/2 " x 4 ".(blank on back). The engraving is suitable for framing and would make an excellent gift.
