PIETRO DA CORTONA'S PRINT
This 371 year old copper plate print was engraved by Pietro da Cortona's (1596-1669) from the painting by Carlo Cesio's (1626-1682) published in Rome in about 1645.
The engraving features a tumultuous battle scene that takes place in Rome. Note the King and Queen looking over the fence at the fighting. Da Cortona specialized in paintings depicting Battles of Alexander the Great and others. The subject of this engraving is Mythological and features Aeneas in battle. Interesting, there is no description or title or any other mark on the print except for the number 14 in the top left corner.
Pietro da Cortona was an Italian painter, who is considered one of the artists of the Roman Baroque, one of the most artistically productive periods in Rome's history. He set the standard for European Baroque fresco painting which endured throughout the 17th Century; among the best known are those he executed for the Barberini family and for the Pitti Palace in Florence. Da Cortona was an Old Master of the Roman School.

CONDITION
This copperplate print is in good condition, with minimal, natural age toning. The image is about 19 " x 15 " on a page that is 19 1/2 " x 15 1/2". (blank on back) There has been some repair in the top right corner out side of the engraving. The copper engraving is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
