Perry's Trade Expedition - "WRESTLERS AT YOKUHAMA" - Antique Print - 1854

RARE, ANTIQUE, TINTED LITHOGRAPH

This 161 year old tinted lithograph is from Commodore Perry's book "TRADE EXPEDITION TO JAPAN" dated 1854. The publisher was Sardony & Co., New York.

In 1854, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) returned to continue the Opening of Japan to the west.  Perry’s landing in Yokohama in March inspired a crowded scene of troops on parade before a horizon prickled with the masts of the black ships. Formal occasions-the presentation of American gifts, a banquet on Perry’s flagship, and a performance of sumo wrestling-were duly recorded.

This engraved print has an image that is about 9 " x 6 1/2 " on a leaf or page that is 11 " x 8 1/2".  It is in very good condition.  It is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
