CLELAND'S DECORATIVE WORK PRINTS
This 82 year old lithograph was rescued from Alfred E. Hamill's "THE DECORATIVE WORK OF T.M. CLELAND", published in New York by The Pynson Printers in 1929.
THE ARTIST
T.M. CLELAND (1880-1964) Thomas Maintland Cleland was a much respected book designer and commentator. He began at 16 to design and publish books from his basement, self-taught. At the "ripe" age of 20, he moved to Boston and published under the imprint Cornhill Press, named after the street where he lived. D. B. Updike of Merrymount Press was an early mentor, who provided commissions and endless criticism. Cleland went on to work as art designer for McClure’s Magazine, the Locomobile Company of America, the Westvaco Corporation, the Cadillac Motor Car Company, and Fortune Magazine, In the 1930s, he made a series of calendar illustrations for the Harris, Seybold, Potter Company of Cleveland Ohio, which established their fed-offset process as a quality printing technique. In between commercial work, Cleland illustrated fine press editions for which he is most remembered today.
CONDITION
The lithograph is in very good condition, with usual age toning. The image is about 9 " x 6 1/2" on a page that is about 12 " x 9 " . Unfortunately there is a round library stamp on the right bottom corner. Fortunately when matted, the stamp hardly shows. (See pic). The litho is suitable for framing and would make an excellent gift.
