Chromolithograph ILLUMINATION
This 152 year old chromolithogrpah was rescued from W.R. Tymms' "THE ART OF ILLUMINATING AS PRACTICED IN EUROPE FROM THE EARLIEST TIMES" published in London by Day & Son in 1860.
An illumination is usually from a manuscript in which the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration, such as decorated initials, numbers, borders and miniature illustrations. The earliest surviving illuminated manuscripts are from the period AD 400 to 600, initially produced in Italy and the Eastern Roman Empire.
The majority of surviving manuscripts are from the Middle Ages, although many illuminated manuscripts survive from the Renaissance. Almost all of these manuscripts are of a religious nature. However, especially from the 13th century onward, an increasing number of secular texts were illuminated. Most illuminated manuscripts were created as codices or ancient books, which had superseded scrolls. A very few illuminated manuscript fragments survive on papyrus, which does not last nearly as long as vellum or parchment. Most medieval manuscripts, illuminated or not, were written on parchment (most commonly of calf, sheep, or goat skin.
The illuminations that are being sold are antique, fine chromolithograph facsimiles of actual illuminations from manuscripts and bibles from the 6th to the 16th centuries. In each case we state the century and source.
The book that this illumination is from is quite rare. It sells for up to $5,400 on the Internet.
CONDITION
The print is in very good condition, with minimal, usual age toning. The image is about 10" x 6 1/2" on a page that is 11 1/4" x 7 1/2 " (blank on back). A short description of the subject of the print will be included with the purchase.
The problem is that each print has a circular stamp from the "Brooklyn Pubic Library" on the right bottom corner. In some cases the stamp is only in the outer border while in others it enters the inner image. The point is that the stamp can be cropped out in most cases during matting. (see image)
The chromo is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
