ANTIQUE BOTANICAL MEZZSOTINT PRINT
This 277 year old MEZZOTINT print is from Johann Weinmann's "PHYTANTHOZA ICONOGRAPHIA" published in Germany in 1737. The plates were produced by Georg Dionysus Ehert.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683 - 1741), apothecary and botanist, is noted for his creation of Phytanthoza iconographia, an ambitious project of eight folio volumes with more than 1,000 hand-coloured engravings of several thousand plants.
His business interests flourished, allowing him the freedom to indulge in his pursuit of botany. He created a botanical garden in Regensburg, published the Catalogus Alphabetico ordine exhibens Pharmaca in 1723 and contributed botanical notes as "Observationes und Anmerkungen" in the "Breslauer Sammlungen".
Weinmann employed Georg Dionysius Ehret as illustrator, who used a newly-developed printing process involving mezzotint, which allowed better detail and shading, and was finished by hand-coloring.
CONDITION
The mezzotint print is in very good condition, with minimal, natural age toning. The image is about 10 " x 9 " on a page that is 15 " x 10 ". (blank on back) It is on hand-made, chain-linked, watermarked paper. The engraving is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
