Weidel's "History of Jesus" -1695- PAY ME WHAT YOU OWE!

HISTORY OF JESUS - COPPER ENGRAVING

This 316 year old copper engraving was rescued from Weidel's "HISTORIA von JESU CHRISTI or HISTORY OF JESUS CHRIST", published in Nuremburg in 1695.

THE ENGRAVER

Christoph Weidel the Elder (1654-1725) of Augsburg worked mainly in Nuremberg but also in Vienna & Frankfurt. He was an engraver as well as a publisher, art dealer and book seller and published over 70 books (many bibles) during his lifetime. Weidel was the first to use a method of scraping in the copper engraving that resulted in a more highly defined image.

Weidel engraved many maps as well as engravings and worked closely in Nuremburg with the famous cartographer Johann Babtist Homann (1664-1724). He also worked together with noted engravers such as Jan & Casper Luyken, Franz Anton Meloni & Paul A. Decker .

THE ENGRAVINGS

While Weidel was the engraver, the artist was Johann Jacob von Sandrart (1655-1698). The subject of the works was the Public Life, Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Christ.

According to Bauer, these Bible pictures were the most beautiful of the Baroque. Weigel's "fine needle technique in Rembrandt's style have a high artisitc value". Each copper engraving has a four line verse in Latin and German below it.

This antique religious print is rare. Bibles with these prints sell for up to $7,500 on the Internet.

CONDITION

The religious engraving is in very good condition, with usual age toning. The image is about 5" x 3 1/4" on a page that is about 6 1/4" x 5", blank on the reverse. The print is on hand-made, water-marked paper with noticable screen marks. The plate mark is evident (see pics) and the images are bright, even and crisp. The engraving is suitable for framing and would make an excellent gift.
