This 216 year old print is from "GENERAL ZOOLOGY or SYSTEMATIC NATURAL HISTORY " by George Shaw from 1800. It was published by G. Kearsley of London and was engraved by Heath.
George Shaw (1751 - 1813) was an English botanist and zoologist. In 1791 Shaw became assistant keeper of the natural history department at the British Museum,
Shaw published one of the first English descriptions with scientific names of several of the common Australian animals in his "Zoology of New Holland" (1794). He was among the first scientists to examine a platypus and published the first scientific description of it in The Naturalist's Miscellany in 1799.
This copper engraving print (the size of the picture) is about 5 1/4" x 3 1/2" on a page that is about 8 1/4" x 5". It is in good condition. It is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
