LUTHER'S 1561 BIBLE - WOODCUT ENGRAVING
This 450 year old woodcut engraving was rescued from Martin Luther's (1483-1546) "PALENTINE or WITTENGERG BIBLE (Biblishe Figuren)" published in Frankfurt by Sigmund Feyerabend in 1561.
The Engraver was Virgil Solis (1514-1562) of Nuremberg. He was freinds with Martin Luther and shared with him the desire to produce a more generously illustrated bible. He was a prolific engraver having completed almost 2,500 engravings during his life. Most of his engravings are signed VS in text. The even more famous engraver, Jost Amman, was an assistant of Solis. According to Schmidt (p236) "With the Virgil Solis illustrated Bible, begins a new Epoch of Bible illustrations. Virgil Solis died in 1562 of the plague.
The print is in good condition, with minimal, usual age toning. The image is about 4 1/2" x 3" (not counting border) on a page that is 6 1/4 " x 4 3/4 ". It was originally part of a bible leaf that was 13 3/4" x 8 3/4". The print is quite tightly cropped but not into the image with no loss. It is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
This print is from an era of famous bibles. The "Geneva Bible" was published in 1560. In 1558 Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne of England and established the Anglican Church.
I have tried to title the print as well as possible. However, I am not a religious expert and many bible stories are similar so my title may be wrong. I tried to find these prints described on the Internet but could find only a few. If you have a correct title, please let me know an I will post it.
The style is German Mannerism with Renaissance-style border including fruit, foliage, insects and animals in architectural scrolls. It is printed on hand-made, laid paper with varying thickness. It has text on back in Gothic German.
This print is rare. Luther's bible sells for up to $9,000 on the Internet. Individual similar engravings sell for up to $450 each. Other Solis woodcuts sell for up to $1,300 each.
