HAND-COLORED COPPER ENGRAVED
DUTCH EMBLEM PRINT
This 357 year old hand-colored copper engraving print is from Jacob Cats' "SPIEGEL VAN DEN OUDEN EN NIEUWEN TIJDT" published by Schipper in Amsterdam in 1655.
Jacob Cats
Jacob Cats (1577-1660), seventeenth-century poet, moralist, and statesman, was one of the leading poets in the golden age of Dutch literature. His emblem books, which reflected a solid Calvinist philosophy, exhorted readers to virtuous and industrial lives. Enormously popular, the books became the source of many well-known maxims and proverbs, giving him the title of "Father Cats," a fond soubriquet still used by modern Dutch to describe him.
Cats is known above all for his moralising poems, found for instance in his Emblem Book 'Spiegel Van Den Ouden en Nieuwen Tijdt'. Seventeenth-century painters could always obtain an appropriate moralistic message for their pictures in Cats's emblem book. As a result, Cats came to have a great influence on the painting of the Dutch Golden Age. Besides being an influential poet, Cats was also Grand Pensionary of Holland and West Friesland, the highest office in the Republic.
CONDITION
The print is in very good condition, with minimal, usual age toning. The image is about 5 1/2 " x 5 1/2 " on a page that is 16 1/2 " x 10 1/2 ".
The engraving is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
