
ANTIQUE, GREEK MYTHOLOGY PRINT This 160 year old print is from the book "ICONOGRAPHIC ENCYCLOPAEDIA: SCIENCE, LITERATURE & ART". This book was by J.G. Heck in 1851. It was engraved by Henri Winkles and published by Appleton in New York..First published in 1849, Heck's encyclopedia was based on Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus's Bilderatlas, one of the finest encyclopedias of its day. Educated people in the 19th Century aspired to the ideal of the "Renaissance man," a well-educated person acquainted with all areas of culture, history and science. Heck conceived his encyclopedia in that spirit, compiling detailed engravings on every aspect of human inquiry.
Johann Georg Heck (a.k.a. G. Heck, J. G. Heck) was a 19th century German author of reference books (i.e., encyclopediae). His works depict many engravings and illustrations on a wide range of subjects; such as architecture, daily life, fine arts, geography, history, mathematics, mythology, natural sciences and technology. Heck is especially known for his Iconographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Literature and Art (English translation, 1851); the copyright-free illustrations in this book are widely used in photocopied artwork. This steel engraving print (the size of the picture) is about 10" x 8 " on a page that is about 11 1/2" x 9 1/2" It is in very good condtion with age toning and minor foxingand executed in the pure line style.
