 ANTIQUE

PHOTOGRAVURE OF FAMOUS HISTORICAL CRIMES

This 151 year old steel engraving print is from the book "CELEBRATED CRIMES" by Alexexandre Dumas. It was published by Barrie in Philadelphia in 1895.

These books sell for up to $2,500 on the Internet.

Photogravure is an intaglio printmaking or photo-mechanical process whereby a copper plate is coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and then etched, resulting in a high quality intaglio print that can reproduce the detail and continuous tones of a photograph.

This photograveur print after De Los Rios is in very good condtion with some minor age toning. There is also damp staining at the bottom of the image. It wil not show when matted tight and framed (see picture).  The price has been adjusted because of the damp stain.

The print that is being offered is entitled "JOANNA OF NAPLES - Andrew of Hungary, first husband of Joanna, strangled by Bertrand d'Artois"
