RARE, ANTIQUE, BOTANICAL PRINT
This 246 year old print is from "TRAIT DES ARBRES FRUITIERS" by Henri- Duhamel Du Monceau dated 1768. It was published Paris and was engraved by Haussard. Each print has a twig from the fruit tree, the flower, the fruit and the seeds.
Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700 - 1782), was a French physician, naval engineer and botanist. As a botanist his standard abbreviation is Duhamel. Elected to the French Acadamy of Sciences in 1738, he served three times as its president, and left an important body of scientific work in such diverse fields as the construction and service of ships, fishing, the cultivation and storage of wheat, and silviculture. He did some work with the naturalist, Buffon.
This hand-colored copper engraving has an image that is 9" x 8" on a print that is about 13" x 9 1/2". It is in very good condtion. It is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
