This 179 year old HAND-COLORED engraving is from Pancrace Bessa's "L'Herbier Generale de L'Ameteur" published in Paris in 1836.
Pancrace Bessa (1772 – 1846) was a French natural history artist, best known for his botanical illustrations. Bessa was a student of the great engraver Gerard van Spaendonck and worked alongside Pierre-Joseph Redouté, some of whose influence shows in Bessa's detailed and delicate treatment of his subjects. He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salons between 1806 and 1831.
The print is in very good condition, with minimal, natural age toning. The image is about 7 1/2 " x 4 1/2 " on a page that is 10 " x 6 1/2 ". The engraving is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
