ANTIQUE STEEL ENGRAVING FEATURING PORTRAITS OF DISTINGUISHED AMERICANS

This 177 year old Steel Engraving is from the book "THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF DISTINGUISHED AMERICANS" dated  1834 by James B. Longacre & James Herring.  The publisher was Philadelphia: Perkins; N.Y. Monson & London: Rich.

James Barton Longacre (1794 – 1869) was an American engraver, who was the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1844 until his death.

From 1833 - 1839, Longacre and James Herring published The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans, which presented portraits and biographical sketches.  Around 1830, he began, in partnership with John Herring, to compile their American Portrait Gallery which was later called National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. Each portrait has a facimile of the person's signature.

This engraving is on a page that is 7 " x 10 1/2 " with theback side blank. It is in good condition with light age toning, nominal edgewear and some minor foxing. It is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.

Today the set of books sells for up to $3,400 on the Internet.

The engraving that is being sold is of "MAJOR GENERAL ALEXANDER McCOMB".
