CUVIER'S HAND-COLORED COPPER ENGRAVING
This 182 year old hand-colored copper engraving is from G. Cuvier's "DIZIONARIO DELLE SCIENZE NATURALI (DICTIONARY OF NATURAL SCIENCE)" published by Batelli in 1830, in Florence. The engraver was Turpin.
Jean Léopold Nicolas Frédéric Cuvier (1769 – 1832), known as Georges Cuvier, was a French naturalist and zoologist. Cuvier was a major figure in natural sciences research in the early 19th century, and was instrumental in establishing the fields of comparative anatomy and paleontology through his work in comparing living animals with fossils. He is well known for establishing extinction as a fact. His most famous work is Le Règne Animal (1817; English: The Animal Kingdom). He was known as Baron Cuvier.
The engraving is in very good condition, with usual minor age toning. The image is about 6 " x 3 3/4 " on a page that is about 9 " x 6 ". The engraving is suitable for framing and would make an excellent gift.
