RARE, ANTIQUE CHROMOLITHOGRAPH BIRD PRINT

This 133 year old print is from "STUDER'S POPULAR ORNITHOLOGY, THE BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA" published by Jacob Henry Studer & Co. of Columbus, Ohio in 1878.  The birds were drawn & colored from life by Theodore Jasper, AM, MD.

These chromolithographs are some of the finest depicting birds known. Some of the later publications do not have the same quality as the earlier printings.

Jacob Henry Studer (1840-1904), printer and publisher, utilized Chromolithography, opposed to the hand-colored print, as an affordable means of capturing the both the brilliant colors of the birds, which are depicted in their natural surroundings. Yhe artist, Jasper followed the tradition of John James Audubon (1770-1851), and Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), in an effort to document and render all of the different species of birds found in 19th-century North America.  Jasper often populated his paintings with many birds similar to the engravings of Alexander Wilson. This popular edition of ornithology is often classified as the 'Poor Man's Audubon'.

This chromolithograph print (the size of the picture) is about 12 " x 9 1/2 " on a page that is about 14 1/2 " x 11 1/4 " It is in very good condtion with the usual age toning. It has high detail and the featured birds are beautiful. This print is suitable for framing and would be an excellant gift.

The print that is being sold is of  "MEXICAN TROGON, COSTA HUMMINGBIRD, CACTUS WREN, CASSINS PURPLE FINCH".
