HAND-COLORED COPPER ENGRAVING - ANTIQUE  RELIGIOUS  PRINT

This 281 year old HAND-COLORED copper engraving is from Johannes Jacob Scheuchzer's "PHYSICA SACRA" or the KUPFER BIBEL" published by Auguste Uindelicorum & Ulmae in Augsburg  in 1731

Johannes Jacob Scheuchzer (1672-1733) was born in Switzerland, the son of a physician. He is known as the the founder of paleobotany and Paleontology. He personally owned one of the largest collections of bones during the 18th century. He was professor of mathematics at the Carolinum, professor of physics at the Academy, and the director of Zurich's Museum of Natural History.

Scheuchzer believed that the Old Testament was a factual account of the history of the world. As a scientist, he embarked on a major project to explain Biblical events in terms of physics, natural history and medicine. His aim was to prove the existence of God through science. He developed a complicated and elaborate theory of this history that he detailed in his Physica Sacra but the Swiss authorities initially refused to grant him a permit to publish it. Eventually a lushly illustrated edition of this extraordinary work as printed between 1731 and 1735 in the great German publishing center Augsburg. It was published both in Latin and in German.

Entitled, Jobi physica sacra, oder Hiobs Natur-Wissenschaft verglichen mit der heutigen, the work became known as the Physica Sacra or the Kupfer-Bibel. It became famous for its elaborate German Baroque illustrations, in which each biblical story was depicted on natural-scentific grounds and framed with an architectural border containing details relevant to the chapter depicted.

Scheuchzer oversaw the illustrations and he entrusted the elaborage borders to Johan Daniel Preissler. The prints were engraved by such noted engravers as G. D.l Heumann, J. A. Corvinus, I.G. Pintz & P.G. Harder.
