Hovey's Fruits of America -1852- THE BEURRE DIEL PEAR - Chromo

$ 59.99

RARE, ANTIQUE,  BOTANICAL PRINT

This 159 year old print is from "THE FRUITS OF AMERICA" by Charles Hovey dated 1852.  It was published by Hovey & Co. in New York and was lithographed by the firm of William Sharpe of Boston. Sharpe's company is bet known for printing some of the Audobon prints. This set is believed to be one of the most beutiful chromolithographs produced in America.

Inspired by national pride, and a desire to document the finest fruit cultivated on American soil, Charles Hovey's "The Fruits of America" is as fine as any 19th Century European Pomology (or collection of fruit). These rare prints, drawn from nature and printed by William Sharp and Son, are the very first and finest early American Chromolithographs of fruit, predating the Civil War. Utilizing up to 10 separate stones for the production of each plate, the quality of the image rivals any early color printing of the period, worldwide. Hovey, an astute nurseryman and a founding member of several horticultural societies throughout New England and the Midwest, developed the Hovey Strawberry, the popular cultivar responsible for the success of the mid-19th Century American Strawberry production.

This chromolithograph has an image that is 6" x 7" on a print that is about 7" x 10 1/2". It is in very good condtion.  It is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.

This is a Rare Print. The total book currently sells for up to $ 15,000 on the Internet.

The print that is being offered is of  "THE BEURRE DIEL PEAR".
